Finding a comic to kick off the book club with was a little challenging at first, because I don't know anything about comics.
I wanted something from maybe a familiar universe, so side characters would make sense, but I also wanted something quirky enough to stand on its own.
So the first comic is......*drumroll*........

A Comic Book Book Club for Nerdy Ladies
Hello!
I'm Jax and this is my book club!
I'm a neuroscience student, surfer, runner, table-top gamer and (not-so) closet geek.
My idea to start a comic book club for women was born out of pure disappointment. See, I went to an even that was SUPPOSED to be about feminism and feminist mythology in comics, but due to the 2016 election, I was treated to a discussion on race and politics instead.
While race and politics are certainly important talking points, it wasn't what I had signed up for. It also made me realize that I really wanted to get into comics but I didn't know how.
I always saw the comic book world as something confusing, convoluted and hard to break into. It just seems like there are so many characters and universes and plot lines that make it very overwhelming to an outsider.
So I decided to start my own thing. I wanted to create something for other women like myself, women who had maybe always wanted to get into comics but didn't know how to do it, or didn't want to do it by themselves.
So, my closet geek book club was born.
I wanted the focus to be on female protagonists and female writers because, even though they are very well meaning, I'm tired of reading what men think I want to read. I don't always want to read a battle comic with super sexy, scantily clad women. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it just isn't what I want.
That's not to say I will like every comic written by a woman. I'm sure I won't. But the spirit here is giving things a chance and I want to give women a chance.
